F4U Corsairs earned notorious reputations in Korea and World War II for how difficult they could be to fly, with U.S. crews later referring to them as the “Widowmaker.” During the 1950–53 Korean War, 494 Corsairs were lost, including one that departed from the aircraft carrier USS Essex on February 21, 1952, and was never seen again. Now, South Korean scuba diver Kim Kyung-soo says he and fellow divers may have documented a wreck off Yangyang after finding a dark, cylindrical object at about 45 meters depth—though it may be at least seven meters below that point. CNN reports Carrier Air Group Five flew 85 combat sorties the day of the loss.
