The Marine Corps' largest aircraft to be featured at Southeast Michigan air show
The Marine Corps’ largest aircraft are set to be featured at the Thunder Over Michigan Air Show in Wayne County in July, with organizers confirming two high-profile platforms. The event plans to display the CH-53 Super Stallion and the MV-22 Osprey from July 17 through July 19 at Willow Run Airport. The CH-53, described as a heavy-lift helicopter, is capable of taking off with 16 tons of cargo and delivering it up to 50 miles away; it measures 99 feet long and more than 28 feet tall. The MV-22 is a tiltrotor aircraft, able to rotate its propellers vertically like a helicopter for takeoff and landing, or horizontally for conventional propeller flight. The show will also include the RAF Red Arrows and the U.S. Air Force F-16 Viper Demo Team. Organizers say ticket sales are live and the event could bring an estimated $2.5 million to $3 million to the local economy.
