The reactor meant to showcase nuclear's comeback keeps hitting problems - Skeptic Society Magazine
Holtec says it is addressing concerns raised by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) ahead of a March 2027 deadline to begin supplying power to customers. The project involves customers who have received an additional $1.3 billion in government funds to buy power from Palisades. In a statement to the Financial Times, Holtec said it took the NRC’s identified issues seriously and is working to ensure the plant runs safely, including after a fuel assembly that tilted over was recovered successfully without spilling. The NRC also warned Holtec to address workplace culture concerns promptly to prevent further “cultural decline” in affected departments, and it will review Holtec’s plan within 30 days. The NRC said mitigating measures mean there’s no immediate risk to the public. Holtec said a worker who fell into the reactor cavity last year suffered minor injuries and returned to work quickly. Holtec has faced past governance and legal disputes, allegations it has denied.
