The Same TSA Scanner That Lets Laptops Stay In Your Bag Is Quietly Ruining Other Gear
xCruzo Brief
The TSA’s rollout of computed tomography (CT) security scanners is changing the checkpoint experience by helping keep laptops and other approved items in carry-on bags—yet it can create new complications for some travelers. The agency awarded orders in March 2022 totaling up to $781.2 million for base and full-size CT X-ray systems, with later procurement adding more units. Unlike older 2D X-ray machines, the CT units generate 3D images that officers can rotate and inspect across three axes. TSA says this improves threat detection and passenger experience. CT scanners are already installed at major U.S. hubs including Atlanta (ATL), Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and New York JFK (JFK).
