Why Boeing 787-9 Operators Are Moving From 2-2-2 To 1-2-1 Business Class
xCruzo Brief
Boeing 787-9 operators are shifting business-class cabins from dense 2-2-2 or 2-3-2 layouts to 1-2-1 “suite” designs, a trend driven by both passenger expectations and corporate travel policies. The key complaint is the “step-over factor”: in older widebody layouts, window-seat passengers reaching the aisle or lavatory must climb over a neighbor whose seat is flat while sleeping. Airlines are spending hundreds of millions on refurbishments to deliver direct aisle access and more privacy. British Airways, for example, replaced a 2-3-2 Club World setup with 38 Club Suites in a 1-2-1 configuration, trading four seats for improved comfort.
