The US Air Force Extended the A-10 to 2030 After It Closed the Depot, the Pilot School and the Engine Line

The U.S. Air Force has stretched the A-10 Warthog retirement timeline after deciding it still needs the aircraft. In fiscal 2026, the service planned to retire all 162 remaining A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, but its current force-structure proposal keeps a reduced fleet through fiscal 2030. Under the plan, 49 A-10s would be retired in fiscal 2027 (leaving 54), none in fiscal 2028, 18 removed in fiscal 2029, and the final 36 retired in fiscal 2030—assuming Congress approves. The fiscal 2026 defense law limits reductions before Oct. 1, 2026, while exemptions apply for airframes deemed uneconomical. The extension follows renewed combat use in Operation Epic Fury.
