Turkish copilot detained in Libya over alleged drunk flight that ended in crash

Libyan prosecutors ordered the detention of two pilots accused of flying a privately operated, Turkey-based jet while drunk, after the aircraft veered off a runway and caught fire at Misrata airport. The crash occurred on Monday during landing and, according to the public prosecution, resulted in no casualties. Prosecutors did not name the pilots. A private Libyan broadcaster, Al Ahrar, reported that the captain is German and the copilot is Turkish, and that the only other person onboard was a Turkish flight attendant. Prosecutors said investigators found evidence the pilots flew the aircraft while intoxicated and that the pair should remain detained pending the investigation. Officials said the pilots “posed a real threat” to the airport, its users, and the airspace involved before the crash.
