United Airlines Dulles Rome flight canceled, fliers stuck
A United Airlines flight from Washington Dulles to Rome turned into an overnight ordeal after technical issues and severe weather delayed United Flight 884. Scheduled to depart Friday, Oct. 2 at 5:35 p.m., the Boeing 777-200ER faced a cockpit malfunction, severe thunderstorms, and multiple crew changes, along with a faulty door seal and problems with the pushback tug. After about six hours, the original crew hit legal working limits and passengers were required to deplane for a new crew. Another mechanical inspection followed a second pushback attempt, prompting a second deplaning. Around 4 a.m., United canceled the flight. The airline rebooked passengers on an extra flight leaving Dulles just before 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3—more than 25 hours after the original departure—sparking online debate about responsibility and passenger protections.
