United Airlines Plots JFK Expansion By Hunting Slots From Rivals Flying At A Loss

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby says the carrier wants to expand at New York JFK by buying landing slots from rivals that are flying unprofitable routes. Speaking to CNBC, Kirby indicated United could re-enter the JFK market as early as next year through a partnership with JetBlue Airways. Because JFK is slot-controlled, carriers using slots for low-fare, price-sensitive leisure flying tend to have the thinnest margins, giving United an opening to negotiate long-term leases or cash purchases. United’s move aligns with its premium-focused strategy under the “United Next” plan launched in 2021.
