United cancels 9/11 Boeing 777 flyover with fighter jets after backlash

United Airlines canceled a planned 9/11 flyover over Denver that would have featured a Boeing 777 escorted by four fighter jets, citing “concerns in the community.” The event was set for 9:03 a.m., the exact time United Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. United said it also planned an aircraft flyover as a gesture for pilots and would suspend those plans while continuing with other memorial activities. Denver’s Office of Emergency Management first alerted residents via social media, saying it was not an emergency, then confirmed the cancellation “following concerns.” Mayor Mike Johnston said the city supports honoring victims and first responders but called the flyover potentially “jarring.” United still plans to unveil a 9-foot-11-inch monument from WTC steel.
