Why Hawaiian Airlines Is Waiting Until 2028 To Add A Premium Economy Cabin To Its Airbus A330 Fleet

Hawaiian Airlines plans to add a true Premium Economy cabin to its Airbus A330-200 fleet in 2028, creating a product gap between lie-flat First Class and the main cabin. The airline will be introducing Premium Economy after years of sticking with its “Premium Class” model: extra-legroom economy seats, which were introduced a decade ago alongside 18 lie-flat First Class seats. The delay stems from multiple factors, including a post-refresh shift to a high-density leisure strategy, pandemic disruption, weaker international demand, the Maui wildfires’ impact, and other capital commitments. The Alaska Airlines takeover later improved the outlook for A330 investment and fleet continuity.
