Waitrose organic salmon supplier investigated over chemicals in loch
Waitrose organic salmon supplier investigated over chemicals in loch reports an inquiry into a supplier’s use of formaldehyde at a Scottish fish farm site that provides organic salmon to major UK retailers. The Scottish Environment and Protection Agency (SEPA) said it launched an investigation after complaints from the Green Britain Foundation (GBF), following a letter seen by The Telegraph. GBF investigators visiting Cooke Aquaculture’s Garasdale site in Kintyre, Argyll, in August 2022 found containers of formalin and additional evidence of chemical use in 2024. The Scottish Government’s Fish Health Inspectorate recorded formalin use at least three times to control fungal infections or post-vaccination. GBF also cited freedom-of-information responses suggesting SEPA had no formaldehyde record for the site. Cooke Scotland’s spokesman said the company had not been contacted by SEPA about an inquiry.
