Was a sweet, tender voice': the pilot who fell for his air traffic controller - before ever seeing her

Alfredo Bravo, a Chile-based pilot who spent much of his 1990s career flying in demanding conditions in Chilean Patagonia and rural China, says a single voice from Santiago air traffic control reshaped his life. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Bravo built a routine of flying that left little room for marriage and kids, including free flights for local children after seeing poverty on nearby roads. In 1999, while preparing to land at a small airfield in Vitacura, Santiago, he first heard the controller’s voice. He spent weeks finding ways to visit the tower, despite mismatched controller and pilot schedules.
