Was British Airways Right To Build Its Future Around 5 Different Widebody Types?

British Airways is renewing its long-haul fleet with a strategy built around variety rather than a single standardized widebody. Its future network will use five aircraft types from three families: Boeing 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10, Airbus A350-1000, and Boeing 777-9. The airline’s plan includes replacing older 777s over time and eventually phasing out the Airbus A380. The complexity could be significant during the transition, since existing 777-200ERs, 777-300ERs and A380s will overlap with the incoming models. Supporters of the approach point to different capacity and range roles, with the 777-9 positioned as the highest-capacity twinjet and the A350-1000 offering more seats.
