Was on flight to 'Europe's most terrifying runway' - 1 thing caught me off guard - AOL
Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo Airport drew a first-hand reaction from a traveler who expected “Europe’s most terrifying runway” to be more disruptive than it turned out to be. The runway sits on the island’s edge, bordered by cliffs and the ocean, with crosswinds making specialist training a requirement for takeoffs and landings. The approach is sharply curved and the runway includes a sudden drop at the end and a highway below. Historically, the airport extended the runway after the 1977 TAP Flight 425 Boeing 727 crash that killed 131 people; the extension reached about 9,124 ft. The traveler flew with easyJet and said the ride wasn’t notably bumpy, except for the approach curve, while highlighting standout departure views from the right-side seat.
