WestJet has canceled 279 flights during Canada’s August long weekend, and none of those cancellations were caused by a strike. The airline’s preemptive decision means Canadian Air Passenger Protection Regulations classify the disruption as within the carrier’s control, triggering stronger rights than cancellations that occur after a strike begins. Under those rules, affected passengers can receive cash compensation of up to CAD 1,000 per person and be rebooked on the next available flight with any airline, including Air Canada.
