Why Airbus Pilots Can Switch From An A320 To An A350 In Just 8 Days
Airbus pilots can switch from an A320 to an A350 in as little as eight days thanks to the manufacturer’s extensive fleet commonality across its Airbus jets. The shared harmonized panel layouts, sidestick controls, ECAM logic, and standardized FMS are designed to make qualifications transferable between models. The approach can help airlines expand their widebody and narrowbody operations without hiring entirely new pilot groups, and it also strengthens Airbus’s leverage when negotiating mixed fleet orders. Competitors use similar ideas: Boeing’s 747, 757, and 767 can employ the Rolls-Royce RB211, and the 757 and 767 share a type rating. Typical Airbus transitions require less time via Cross Crew Qualification, compared with about 40 days for conventional type rating courses.
