Why are fighter jets roaring over Southwest Florida?
Residents across Southwest Florida have been hearing and seeing fighter jets over the region, sparking questions online about whether flight patterns changed or about mosquito-control flights. The jets are actually IAI Kfir C2 delta-wing fighters—Israeli-built—using Southwest Florida International (RSW) for takeoffs and landings and flying overhead. A spokeswoman for RSW, Victoria Moreland, declined comment and pointed questions to ATAC, a subsidiary of Textron. ATAC representatives were not immediately available for explanation. The flights relate to adversary air support and tactical airborne training, ATAC says it performs at Naval Air Station Key West. The base is undergoing $72.4 million in runway and taxiway repairs expected to run until January, which may affect how long the Kfirs stay in Southwest Florida, especially with Hurricane Isaias approaching.
