Why The Next Generation Of Aircraft Engines May Not Need A Revolutionary New Design

Manufacturers increasingly believe the next leap in aircraft propulsion won’t require a clean-sheet engine design. Speaking at the Farnborough Airshow, MTU Aero Engines said future gains are more likely to come from evolving today’s successful concepts—using improved materials, manufacturing methods, digital engineering, hybrid architectures, and sustainable fuels. André Sinanian, MTU’s Senior Vice President for Commercial Engine Programs, argued the current geared turbofan (GTF) platform still has “untapped potential” and can be developed further to meet next-generation requirements. The company expects evolutionary technology work rather than waiting decades for another major architecture change.
