Rolls-Royce’s UltraFan concept is aiming to outscale today’s biggest commercial engines, challenging Boeing’s next-generation GE9X plans for the 777X. The GE9X is scheduled to enter service in 2027 and would be the largest commercial jet engine at launch, built from Boeing and General Electric’s continued collaboration. UltraFan, however, is in the demonstrator phase: Rolls-Royce began assembling its first unit in 2021 at its DemoWorks facility in Derby and has completed about two years of ground testing. The concept features a 140-inch fan, a geared architecture, carbon-titanium blades and composite casing, targeting a bypass ratio up to 15:1 versus GE9X’s 10:1.
