Yan Oya fish harvest earns Rs. 696,000

A circular cage fish farming pilot at Sri Lanka’s Yan Oya Reservoir has produced its first commercial-scale harvest, NAQDA said. The operation yielded 1,202 kilograms of fish and generated Rs. 696,000 in revenue. The authority said the initiative is designed to help close the country’s annual fish supply deficit, estimated at an additional 300,000 tonnes, while strengthening rural livelihoods. NAQDA reported that 15,000 fish fingerlings were reared starting May 18, 2026, and that 3,600 advanced fingerlings—each weighing more than 50 grams—were introduced into the circular cage on July 30. Harvesting on Oct. 15 resulted in fish sold at Rs. 600 per kilogram.
