Years after first game in Valley, Coyotes' legacy endures
xCruzo Brief
On Oct. 10, 1996, the Phoenix Coyotes played their first game in Arizona at America West Arena, beginning 27 seasons of NHL hockey in the Valley. The franchise’s origin dates to 1995, when Winnipeg Jets owners Richard Burke and Steven Gluckstern bought the team for $65 million and later pushed Gary Bettman to explore a move after a Minnesota plan fell through. The Coyotes relocated to Salt Lake City after the 2023-24 season, but longtime players and fans say the legacy remains. Former defender Jason Demers and captain Shane Doan pointed to the growth of local youth hockey and the team’s memories, from early “Whiteout” games to an emotional run at Mullett Arena.
