Bill would honor Charlotte Medal of Honor winner Francis Flaherty

The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously advanced a bill on Wednesday, Sept. 16 to honor Charlotte Medal of Honor recipient Francis Flaherty by naming the city’s post office after him. Congressman Tom Barrett’s bipartisan H.R. 9570 would designate the “Francis C. Flaherty Post Office Building” at 117 W. Lovett St. Flaherty, a World War II Medal of Honor winner, died during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 while serving aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma. The legislation now moves to the U.S. Senate. Flaherty’s remains were identified in late 2019 and laid to rest in Charlotte on Aug. 21, 2021.
