Birds caught in fishing line and dangling from trees rescued, 1 euthanized

Volunteers with the Sacramento Heron and Egret Rescue saved a pigeon entangled in fishing line and caught high in a tree near the Capital City Freeway E Street off-ramp. The group said it responded to reports on Sunday and that the bird was still alive and struggling when firefighters and the California Highway Patrol arrived for traffic control. Rescuers found fishing line tangled in the tree, including a long piece extending across the street, and removed the remaining line. The pigeon was taken to the Wildlife Care Association of Sacramento, where a wing injury was found. Weeks earlier, a juvenile red-tailed hawk was rescued in south Sacramento but euthanized due to severe damage from similar entanglement.
