Boat with migrants capsized north off Libya, leaving 51 dead or missing, group says

CAIRO (AP) — A migrant boat bound for European shores capsized off eastern Libya on June 12, leaving 51 people dead or missing, the Abreen group said Friday. Ten migrants survived, and eleven bodies were recovered, while forty remain missing. Libyan coast guard and Tobruk’s Red Crescent reported recovering bodies as rescue teams moved the deceased onto shore. The central Mediterranean route has seen rising fatalities this year, with the IOM recording more than 800 dead or missing between January 1 and May 16, and over 1,300 last year. Libya has become a major launch point for migrants fleeing conflict, often held in detention centers amid reports of abuse documented as crimes against humanity by UN investigators.
