New state entity to promote Maine's marine economy
Maine is creating the Maine Center for the Blue Economy to promote its marine economy along 5,300 miles of coastline. A 2025 consultant's report estimated ocean-related industries contributed $6.8 billion and supported more than 90,000 jobs in 2021. The center, authorized by the Legislature, launches in July to attract investment and ventures across marine sectors.
An initial $100,000 budget will be supplemented by private and federal funding to sustain early work. Brian Whitney, president of the Maine Technology Institute, will oversee efforts to coordinate research, commercialization, patenting, and workforce development across government, industry and academia. The center aims to serve as a hub for collaboration among public and private partners.
