Brexit: 10 years on farmers and fishermen give their views
Ten years after Brexit, farmers and fishermen in the UK are offering sharply different perspectives, with several speakers saying the deal has not delivered expected benefits. One angler and farmer, Ball, said he would still vote to leave today, arguing that the agreement has brought “regulation” for others while leave supporters “got everything.” Fishermen described feeling betrayed and warned that without changes, inshore fishing may not survive. Jim Partridge of Monteum Ltd, in Shoreham, said he voted to leave and claimed the UK was supposed to be freed from Europe, yet French fishermen still operate in the Channel up to six miles from Sussex. He cited a six-mile boundary based on “historical rights,” while UK fleets wanted a “line down the middle,” and alleged stock declines off Sussex since joining Europe. Partridge said he would vote leave again, even as calls to rejoin EU continue.
