Broken masts, torn sails: Nearly half of Bayview Mackinac race boats drop out after squalls

Broken masts and torn sails marked the Bayview Mackinac sailing course as nearly half the fleet withdrew after Saturday squalls on Lake Huron. Race officials said 85 of 193 boats that started the race on Saturday in southern Lake Huron had pulled out by Sunday morning, following an earlier report that 30 had retired overnight. Officials stressed all sailors were safe and thanked Lake Huron shoreline harbors for taking in boats that retired. During the stormy afternoon, damaging winds and high waves caused reported equipment failures, including snapped masts and torn sails, while some crews reported seasickness. Conditions were expected to improve Sunday with breezy weather and about 4-foot waves. The race finishes at Mackinac Island, with first boats expected to cross the line tonight and awards on Tuesday at Mission Point Resort. The event involves teams from 11 U.S. states and Ontario, and is part of Michigan’s America 250 celebration.
