Buying used dock or boat in MN? Check for zebra mussels first

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is warning buyers and sellers to inspect used docks, boats, trailers, lifts and other water equipment for aquatic invasive species, particularly zebra mussels. The DNR says the mid-season used market can be riskier than spring because equipment moved during the season may carry attached invasive species into waters where zebra mussels or other invasives are not present. In Minnesota, docks and lifts must remain out of the water for at least 21 days before being placed into another waterbody. Anyone transporting dock or lift items with attached zebra mussels for decontamination needs a free permit. The agency recommends checking dock posts, footings, wheels and underwater support bars, draining equipment before transport, and drying items for at least five days. It also encourages decontamination at free stations and, when needed, using permitted lake service providers.
