Canadian steamship torpedoed by Nazi U-boat discovered off MDI
xCruzo Brief
A team of volunteer divers has discovered the wreck of the Canadian merchant ship SS Cornwallis off Maine’s Mount Desert Island, roughly 82 years after it was torpedoed during World War II. The dive group spent seven years locating the vessel, which had been sought ever since headlines linked its sinking to a German U-boat that dropped off two Nazi spies near Hancock. The torpedo killed 43 crew members, most Canadian, and left five survivors rescued by aircraft and fishing boats. Divers now plan to help provide closure for surviving families. The submarine’s saboteurs included William C. Colepaugh and Erich Gimpel.
