Shipwreck found in Gulf of Maine more than 80 years after WWII sinking
xCruzo Brief
The SS Cornwallis, a steam merchant ship sunk during World War II, has been located in the Gulf of Maine more than 80 years after it went down. Divers from the Nomad Exploration Team discovered the wreck nearly 400 feet below the surface off Mount Desert Rock in July and announced the find Tuesday. The Cornwallis was torpedoed by the German U-1230 on December 3, 1944, killing 43 of the 48 people aboard. Courted by history as one of the largest unfound shipwrecks left in New England, the search began in 2019 and required difficult dives. The story of the submarine’s mission also connects the sinking to a Nazi spy operation involving Hancock.
