Catherine Breed comes ashore in Bodega Bay amid 900-mile swim down California coast

Open-water swimmer Catherine Breed came ashore in Bodega Bay after progressing on her 900-mile attempt to swim the length of California, from the Oregon border down to Mexico. Speaking Sunday at Westside Regional Park overlooking Bodega Harbor, the 33-year-old Mill Valley resident addressed concerns about sharks, saying great whites are present but noting she will be surrounded by two vessels—her 52-foot sailboat and another craft—throughout the swim. As of Sunday, Swim California (the expedition name) had put her at 314 miles covered in her first 40 days, slightly ahead of schedule. Breed said she’s more worried about boat propellers and fear of failing to reach San Diego. Her background includes breaking records at Lake Tahoe and completing previous marathons, including swims across the English Channel, North Channel, and more.
