Chinese fishing fleet shifts operations from Peru to Chile

Chile has become a new resupply hub for a large Chinese fishing fleet in the South Pacific after the vessels reduced logistical operations in Peru, Chilean authorities say. The Chilean Navy is monitoring hundreds of foreign vessels on the high seas and detected 70 foreign fishing boats north of Easter Island, about 900 miles from the Chilean coast. Authorities also logged more than 300 vessels operating outside Chile’s exclusive economic zone. There are no reports so far of any entering Chilean waters. Peru also tightened monitoring and activated a satellite center and eight tracking systems, as concerns over illegal fishing have persisted in the region.
