ClassNK has a singular view on diversification
ClassNK’s CEO Hayato Suga says the society’s approach to diversification is different from many European classification groups, which have spent two decades building broader assurance businesses. In an interview, Suga argued that ClassNK’s non-profit structure keeps its focus on the maritime sector, where continuity, stability, neutrality, and fairness are central. With no shareholders, resources are reinvested in people, technology, systems, and the organization itself. He contrasted this with a private-company model that may suit firms seeking faster expansion across certification sectors, particularly to raise capital. When ClassNK does diversify, it extends from existing maritime customers outward. Beyond ISO management-system work, it certified sustainable aviation fuel in 2024 through its ClassNK SCS scheme, the first in Asia approved by ICAO for CORSIA. ClassNK is also preparing for AI-driven surveys and inspections, while stressing responsibility must remain clear if AI-based assessments create problems.
