Clear waters are making Spring River Lake in Hancock County, Maine, a strong option for snorkeling, swimming and paddling, according to a guide that was originally published in August 2021. The lake spans about 700 acres west of Cherryfield and can be reached via a public boat launch with parking. Much of the shoreline remains undeveloped because it lies within Donnell Pond Public Lands, a 14,000-acre protected forest area, though a few houses exist along parts of the south shore. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 28 feet and a mean depth of 14 feet, and is historically popular with bait fishermen. A state survey revised in 1995 lists fish such as common and golden shiners and marginal habitat for brown trout. Other documented species include wild brook trout, white suckers, redbreast sunfishes, eels and alewives.
