Salvage workers had been struggling to pull the stranded fishing vessel Lake Bay out of the surf zone at Point Reyes National Seashore, but late Wednesday they finally made progress. Five days after the 58-foot trawler ran aground on a sand bar on remote North Beach in Marin County, crews used an incoming tide and the pulling power of a second bulldozer to drag the boat farther onto sand. Lt. Cmdr. Carey Lewis said the craft was still in the high-tide area and that once it reaches a safer position, workers will start removing the squid. The challenge is scale: the vessel has 40 tons of squid in its hold, making the job difficult after earlier pumping attempts failed. Lewis said Coast Guard concerns included vessel stability and the risk of a hull breach and possible diesel discharge. The area is within the federally protected Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, where workers had removed 1,400 gallons of diesel and 160 gallons of hydraulic and lube oils.
