xCruzo Brief
At least 16 people were rescued from the Pacific Ocean off Mexico’s Baja California coast in the predawn hours Friday, and the U.S. Coast Guard is searching for more, authorities said. The Coast Guard received a report of a vessel in distress around 1 a.m. and found people floating about 140 miles (225 km) west of Ensenada, said Petty Officer Chris Sappey. Rescued people were taken to San Diego hospitals, where three were treated at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, including one person with a suspected shark bite and two for cold exposure. U.S. Navy and Coast Guard assets, including two helicopters, a fixed-wing plane and a cutter, are assisting Mexican authorities. One survivor said as many as 27 were aboard.
