Cristiano Ronaldo breaks down in tears as he wears Diogo Jota shirt after Portugal World Cup win
Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in tears as he wore a Diogo Jota shirt after Portugal’s dramatic World Cup win over Croatia. The Portugal captain was emotional following the 2-1 victory in their last-32 match in Toronto on Thursday, as he paid tribute on the first anniversary of Jota’s death. Jota died in a car crash in Spain on July 3, and Ronaldo appeared with a Portugal shirt bearing Jota’s name and the No 21, wearing it while celebrating with teammates and fans. After the final whistle, cameras captured Ronaldo wiping tears, and he later received the Player of the Match award while explaining the date’s importance for the squad. Earlier, he scored a penalty after a VAR review to bring Portugal back into the contest. Portugal then held off Croatia, where a 103rd-minute goal by Josko Gvardiol was ruled offside after VAR, preserving Portugal’s lead.
