Cumbrian residents 'deserve support' amid cost-of-living crisis
Cumbrian residents 'deserve support' amid cost-of-living crisis covers a motion planned for next week’s Cumberland Council meeting asking for assistance for residents facing ongoing affordability pressures. The council will meet at The Civic Centre in Carlisle on Tuesday, July 14, where Cllr Tim Pickstone (Longtown, Lib Dems) and Cllr Roger Dobson (Corby and Hayton, Lib Dems) will propose the motion. Pickstone said geopolitical conflict in Iran and the wider Middle East has disrupted energy and commodity supply chains through shipping impacts near the Strait of Hormuz. He cited revised food inflation expectations from the Food and Drink Federation, projecting around 9% by the end of 2026, with the greatest burden on lower-income households. He also highlighted quarterly changes to the energy price cap and the limited coverage for rural residents relying on heating oil or LPG, noting Cumberland Council launched a Heating Oil Support Fund on April 2, 2026. The motion argues the crisis is not over and warns effects could worsen in 2026 and 2027.
