Bob Cherry, a three-sport standout at Wittenberg University in the 1960s, died Monday, June 8, in Springfield at age 85. He is the only man in Wittenberg history to win four letters in each of three sports, excelling as an All-American football wide receiver, an all-conference basketball center, and an NCAA champion hurdler. The 6-foot-4 Akron East High School graduate helped lead two national championship campaigns and reconnected with the university in recent years, attending Hall of Honor ceremonies. His versatility made him a defining figure of an era when student-athletes often pursued multiple sports.
