Dead and 3 missing after boat carrying mostly family members sinks near Alcatraz Island
A boat carrying mostly family members sank near Alcatraz Island on Tuesday afternoon, leaving one person dead, three missing and 16 rescued off San Francisco, authorities said. Crews found a three-deck pontoon vessel almost fully submerged with the motor running and fuel leaking, according to Fire Chief Dean Crispen. By Tuesday evening, officials were searching for the missing in the open ocean on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge, using divers, helicopters and vessels, with the operation expected to continue overnight. The number of missing people was updated from two to three after speaking with witnesses. Crispen said three injured people who fell from the boat were taken to a hospital and expected to be released later Tuesday night. The death occurred after the person was pulled alive from cold water, and a dog onboard also died.
