Documentary Alleges CIA-Trained Afghan Units Killed Civilians During 2021 Kabul Airport Evacuation - [your]NEWS
A new documentary is renewing scrutiny of the chaotic final days of the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal, alleging that CIA-trained Afghan “Zero Units” killed civilians during the clearance of Kabul International Airport. The claims come from former U.S. service members interviewed for a Wall Street Journal documentary, “The Path to Zero,” which examines the role of elite Afghan units during the Biden administration’s evacuation. Several veterans say they witnessed Zero Units using vehicles and gunfire against civilians as U.S. and allied forces struggled to control the airport. Retired Marine Gunnery Sgt. Edward Gonzalez said the conduct was “unmistakable,” describing people being “ran over.” Retired Marine Sgt. Josephy Laude made similar allegations. Retired Rear Adm. Peter Vasely said he received “no reports” documenting such actions, though he did not dismiss the accounts. Other retired commanders said the units were vital to holding the airport.
