Dozens of Migrants Wade Ashore on Crowded Spanish Island Beach

A small boat carrying 26 migrants—20 men and six women—arrived at Cala Santanyí on the Spanish island of Mallorca at about 1:55 p.m. on Friday, with beachgoers watching. Lifeguards saw the group approach a packed shoreline and rushed in to help as some jumped into the sea and others attempted to cross a rocky headland. Guardia Civil patrols arrived shortly after to take over the response. Local media reported all 26 were in good health with no serious injuries. The incident was one of four boats intercepted or rescued around Mallorca and Formentera within hours, bringing Friday’s total arrivals to 75. Over the last 24 hours, about 100 people arrived irregularly on Mallorca, and 274 boats carrying 5,095 migrants have reached the archipelago so far this year, according to compiled official figures.
