Dragged My Daughter!': Sheriff Captain's Son Charged in Crash That Killed 2 Black Residents, But His Day in Court Leaves Victims' Families Furious
Jason Williams, 49, and Charise Dickerson, 42, died after an e-bike crash in Wilson, North Carolina, early on Sept. 24. Authorities say a 2018 Toyota Camry struck the riders from behind. Driver Collin Weston McLaughlin, 22, called 911 and, according to the Wilson Times, told dispatch he was waiting for his father—James “Jimmy” McLaughlin, a captain with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office—who reportedly arrived before first responders. Search warrants cited by WRAL News indicate McLaughlin took a breath test showing alcohol influence, later confirmed by a field sobriety test. He faces two second-degree murder counts and two felony death-by-motor-vehicle counts with possible life in prison; prosecutors charged him Sept. 30 and a judge set bond at $1 million after his Oct. 2 surrender.
