Photos circulating on social media claiming to show the sinking of the motor vessel KM Virgo Transport 8 in the Java Sea are false. Tempo.CO, Jakarta reports that the vessel reportedly lost contact and capsized while sailing from Surabaya to Banjarmasin on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026. However, the images posted on Sept. 14, 2026 by multiple Facebook accounts were generated using artificial intelligence, according to Tempo’s verification using reverse image searches, credible sources, and AI detection tools. A comparison with the ship’s official photo on marinetraffic.com shows major differences. Detection tools reported AI-generation confidence up to 99.9%.
