Fareham man's memories of a world sailing adventure 50 years ago
xCruzo Brief
Fareham carpenter Colin Foskett, 79, has recalled the life-changing voyage of his yacht, the Auralyn II, 50 years ago. A crew of Foskett’s wife June, friends Maurice and Maralyn Bailey, and Tony Martin sailed from Llanelli, Wales in summer 1975. Their trip covered South America before they entered the Southampton International Boat Show in 1976. Foskett says armed soldiers boarded the yacht on multiple occasions and told them they were flying the wrong flag. He remembers detentions three times by local authorities: Cape Verde, Montevideo, and Punta Arenas. He also had an encounter face-to-face with a whale.
