Firefighters battle Fontainebleau forest fire near Paris as two arrested
Firefighters battled a large forest blaze in Fontainebleau, near Paris, as investigations into its origin continued and at least two people were arrested. Reporting from Reuters on July 14, the Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the fire was still not under control late on Monday. The main Fontainebleau fire, plus a nearby blaze that began Monday afternoon, had burned about 1,300 hectares (3,212 acres). Because the area is only a few kilometers from the Palace of Fontainebleau, authorities deployed significant resources, including water-carrying planes and helicopters, and Canadair aircraft that skimmed the River Seine to refill their tanks. The fire, roughly 70 km from Paris, led to the closure of the A6 highway and disrupted some high-speed rail services, while up to 900 people were evacuated.
