Fisheries Department plants 3,750 coral seedlings in Sabah for World Oceans Week 2026
Malaysia’s Fisheries Department has planted 3,750 first-generation coral seedlings at the Layang-Layang Reef in Sabah as part of World Oceans Week 2026 efforts to strengthen marine ecosystem recovery. The site covers 5,000 square metres, and the department also installed 600 coral settlement tiles at Pulau Redang to support rehabilitation of damaged reef areas. The department’s director-general, Datuk Adnan Hussain, said the programmes provide a platform for conservation initiatives carried out with strategic partners and local communities. In addition, the Blue Barrier Project continued through the installation of 1,600 metres of conservation zone buoys and 37 boat mooring buoys at Perhentian Island in Terengganu. To help threatened species, 790 turtle hatchlings, including hawksbill turtles, were released in Terengganu, Johor and Melaka. The programmes were carried out with multiple partners, according to a statement on June 23.
