Fisherman, 71, attacked and killed by 12-foot alligator alongside Florida lake - Now Georgia
A 71-year-old fisherman, Steven Hamilton of Winter Garden, was attacked and killed by a nearly 12-foot alligator on Friday at Lake Apopka’s Dr. Bradford Memorial Park in Florida, about 15 miles northwest of Orlando. Winter Garden Police said Hamilton was standing on the shoreline at around 5 p.m. when the reptile struck; with other active alligators in the water, rescue efforts were complicated. Fire Chief Jose Gainza said Hamilton’s body was recovered about two hours later. His death marked the second deadly alligator attack in Florida this year, following the June killing of a 31-year-old Oviedo woman by a 13-foot alligator. Police said they were not alerted beforehand about an alligator near the shoreline and that wildlife officials trapped and killed the animal.
