FISHING: Bluegills at night offer respite from heat | Arkansas Democrat Gazette
xCruzo Brief
Night fishing at Midway Lake in southeast Arkansas turns the heat into a different kind of challenge: a swarm of mayflies. Fly fisherman Carlton Wing and videographer Mike Dunn used live mayflies as night-fishing cues, after noticing an abundance of Ephemeroptera around the lake’s photovoltaic lights. Adult mayflies lack functional mouthparts, so they don’t bite, but they still cover light posts and even gather around Wing’s bass boat. The insects draw hungry bluegills, turning the illuminated shoreline into an easy target for anglers using fly gear. Wing’s crew filmed the experience for “Wing’s Arkansas’s Great Outdoors.”
